Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Downtown Jakarta

Torrential rain swept through Jakarta on Tuesday, triggering severe flooding in several districts and disrupting daily life for thousands of residents. Authorities have issued emergency warnings as water levels continue to rise.

The flooding, which began early in the morning, has submerged streets, stranded commuters, and forced some residents to evacuate their homes. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that at least 5,000 homes have been affected, with some areas experiencing water levels up to one meter high.

“The drainage system is overwhelmed, and with more rain expected, we are closely monitoring the situation,” said Agus Wibowo, a BNPB spokesperson.

Traffic Chaos and Power Outages

As floodwaters covered major roads, traffic in Jakarta ground to a halt. Public transportation services, including the commuter train and TransJakarta buses, faced significant delays, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Some neighborhoods also experienced power outages after electricity providers shut down services in flooded areas to prevent electrical hazards.

Residents Struggle to Cope

Local residents waded through knee-deep water to salvage belongings, while others sought refuge in temporary shelters.

“We didn’t expect the water to rise this quickly,” said Rina Kusuma, a mother of two who had to evacuate her home in West Jakarta. “We just grabbed what we could and left.”

Authorities have deployed emergency response teams to assist affected communities and distribute food and medical supplies.

More Rain Expected

Meteorologists warn that heavy rainfall could continue throughout the week, increasing the risk of further flooding. Officials urge residents in low-lying areas to remain alert and prepare for potential evacuations.

“The safety of our citizens is our top priority,” Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono said in a statement. “We are working to manage the situation and provide assistance to those in need.”

As the city braces for more rain, emergency crews remain on high alert, prepared to respond to worsening conditions.
